The international press calls him: „The Boogie Woogie Mozart“. „Rising jazz star from Germany, brilliant pianist Dan Popek!“ wrote legendary Reduta Jazz Club before the concert at 39th International Jazz Festival Prague 2017. Dan Popek was born on March 23, 1996 in Bad Friedrichshall (Baden-Württemberg) and grew up in a musical family. He was introduced to the piano by his parents and started playing the piano at the age of four. He seems to carry music in his blood – both parents are classical pianists and taught him the piano skills. After six years of classical lessons he accidentally discovered his passion for jazz, blues and boogie-woogie. He self-trained and studied his first pieces of this music style and presented them at various occasions with great success. After graduation he decided to become a professional musician. At age 13 he played his first public concert under own name and thrilled the audience with his virtuoso boogie-woogie. It was followed by numerous performances at various festivals and concerts among headliners like Cory Henry, the Spider Murphy Gang and the Mojo Blues Band. He has appeared at Blues Night Leingarten together with Barbara Dennerlein and Albert Koch. Other stations were the Summerjazz Festival Pinneberg, the Idstein Jazz Festival, the International Blues Festival Brunn, Austria and the Bavarian Jazzweekend where he has performed as a solo pianist in front of 2.000 people. He has played with blues legends such as Abi Wallenstein, Axel Zwingenberger, Joja Wendt and Silvan Zingg. In August 2012 he participated in one of the biggest Boogie Woogie Festivals of the world in Hamburg, Germany. In November of that year he recorded his first CD album „88 Keys & Me“ which was published in January 2013. In 2016 he released his second CD album „The Shout“ and performed on German SWR TV at the „Coffee or Tea“ Show for the first time. He has won the Yamaha Promotion Award two times and is a laureate of the piano solo competitions „Youth plays music“ and „Youth plays jazz“. After winning Sascha Klaar’s „Hot Pianos Show“ he was recognized as the „Best young German pianist“. It was followed by other show and radio appearances in Berlin together with Lars Redlich, Tim Fischer and Johnny Armstrong. His gigs led him to legendary stages like Frankfurt’s Old Opera, Jazzland Vienna, Mercedes-Benz Berlin, Cotton Club Hamburg – all over Europe. In 2018 he had an invitation to the International Boogie Woogie Festival Cambrai, France and performed with Chuck Berry pianist Daryl Davis on stage. He currently is part of the jury for the children’s piano competition „Talent Days“. Dan Popek is a student at Heidelberg university and lives in Bad Rappenau, Germany.
